Who's who in Gippsland

As a Brigade Support Officer in West Gippsland I seem to spend some time chatting with volunteers over brigade matters, but never knowing what their interests are outside CFA. They all seem to listen to me rattle on about fishing!

I came across a candidate to interview who volunteers not only with CFA but also volunteers in other committees in his local town.

Meet Russell Wright who became a member soon after Black Saturday but dove straight in the deep end and became secretary for the brigade.

Russell and his partner Michael own and run the Star Hotel in a small town in Gippsland called Walhalla. Walhalla came about during the gold rush in the 19th century and at one stage had over 5000 residents. It is now a popular tourist town featuring mine tours and an historic railway. Michael built the hotel in 1998 as a replica of the old Star Hotel which was lost in 1951 to fire.

Reason for joining CFA?: “give back to the community, and broaden horizons. Gain some specialist skills. Meeting people was also a big reason for joining; coming into a small town you would think it would be easy to meet people but it is not easy. So I joined with Erica & District Brigade to meet others and be a valued community member.”

Interests?: “Travelling. In the past year I have been to Bangladesh, Japan, Thailand. Japan is the favourite as it is so easy to navigate around with English written everywhere, great food, and cheap. Our next destination is the UK, France and Frankfurt. Can’t wait!”

“I also have a keen interest in gardening and orchids especially. Growing rare plant bulbs as a hobby is rewarding. And relaxing!”

Sport Team?: “Hahaha, nope don’t really follow sports… Although I enjoy skiing and boating when I get the chance,”

What are you doing around the home to prevent fires?:

“Lots! We have a back-up generator just incase. Even though we are really close to the Power Stations in the valley Walhalla was the last town in Victoria to get power. Let’s just say because of our remoteness we are very self sufficient therefore everyone in town has a back-up generator, and knows how to use it!”

“We also have a cupboard with protective clothing, spare fire hose, mops and buckets. And keep the gardens well maintained.”

Thanks for your time Russell!
