Firefighters were called to the landfill site at Wests Road in Werribee just after 5pm this evening after reports of large plumes of black smoke.

Eighteen CFA and MFB vehicles and council water tankers and excavators took 2 hours to bring the fire under control.

Water was pumped from a dam near the site to help extinguish the rubbish fire.

Incident Controller Darryl Wells from Werribee brigade brought the operation to a close at 9pm and responsibility for monitoring the site was handed back to the local Wyndham tip operators.

Advice messages were issued during the incident to keep the community informed and aware of why there was smoke in the area.

CFA brigades involved were: Caroline Springs, Hoppers Crossing, Lara, Little River, Melton, Point Cook, Rockbank, Truganina, Werribee, and Wyndham Vale.
