Following a Chief Officer’s teleconference towards the end of last fire season, Operations Managers requested the development of a set of principles that Incident Controllers may use to determine when to publish a warning or advice message.

As there is no linear or empirical  prescription that could be applied in order to determine whether or not to issue a warning, Incident Controller’s need to make the decision based on principles, judgement and experience.

To assist with this determination, the ‘Warnings and Advice Size Up and Consideration’ flowchart developed. This flowchart lists  a range of factors and variables that will assist in making the most effective and appropriate decision to distribute warnings.

This ‘Warnings and Advice Size Up’ has been produced so that it may be enlarged and printed for display at relevant locations . This will promote a proactive and positive approach to decision making in the context of issuing timely, relevant and tailored warnings whilst retaining the flexibility to make that determination based on risk, timeframes, expectations and the like.

Over the course of this summer you will notice that the ‘Warnings and Advice Size Up’ will be displayed in various centres such that it is an aid to decision  making.
