Total Fire Ban: Wimmera and Mallee

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) has been declared in Wimmera and Mallee Districts tomorrow, Saturday 7 January. This was made following advice from the Bureau of Meteorology.

There is also a ‘Severe’ Fire Danger Rating for Wimmera and ‘Extreme’ for the Mallee District.

CFA Deputy Chief Officer John Haynes said that grassland in these areas has already dried out and is a significant fuel load.

“A hot air mass from central Australia will also create favourable fire conditions,” he said.

“We expect a cool change in the early to late evening tomorrow which will see conditions improve.

“The fire agencies are also asking anyone who has been burning off recently to double check that their burn is fully extinguished.

Victoria is one of the most fire prone areas in the world. Being prepared and having a written and practiced Bushfire Survival Plan can save you and your family from being killed by fire,” he said.

Remember: Staying to defend a well prepared property is very difficult and can be extremely risky. There is no guarantee that a fire truck or fire fighters will be able to assist you. Your life may be at risk or you may be seriously injured defending your property.
