Tanker fuel spill update

Following the spill of thousands of litres of fuel from an overturned tanker, the southbound lanes of the Hume Freeway reopened at around 11.30am.

But the northbound lanes will be shut for much of the day.

“The tanker was carrying both petrol and diesel, and this mixture eats into the tarmac. A section of the road may need resurfacing,” says Incident Controller Gerry Hauke.

“The fuel mixture is a solvent on tar.”

The tankers were towed away earlier this morning and the truck was towed away at around 11.30am.

Gerry says the environmental impact of the spill is still being assessed by EPA, VicRoads and WorkSafe. "They are looking at where the fuel has gone – inspecting the ground and drains."

CFA has left the Wallan pumper tanker with the environmental team in case it’s needed.

“This is one of the worst fuel spills on the freeway for a long time.”

There are houses only 200-300 metres away, so it could have been a lot worse.

"We’ve got some good blokes up here who sorted the incident very quickly,” says Gerry.
