Soil contaminated at South Morang

CFA and MFB crews have spent the day on scene at a property in South Morang after contaminated soil was found in a garden.

Residents at the property had noticed a smell in their home from last Wednesday, and contacted 000 around 8.30am this morning after they began feeling unwell.

Specialist Scientific Officers have been on-scene working with firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using electronic monitoring equipment.  At this stage, seven people have been hospitalised as a result of the chemical smell including two paramedics.

The chemical is believed to be a fibreglass resin and the local council has been called to the scene to assist with removing the contaminated soil and placing them in oversized containers.
