The parents and 12 year old child were lucky to escape after a fire engulfed their one storey brick home.
The family say the smoke alarm woke them up around 3 o'clock this morning and CFA crews arrived on scene soon after to find the Panmure street house well alight.
Around 12 firefighters battled the blaze which destroyed about 75 per cent of the home.
Southern Metropolitan Regional Duty Officer Paul Carrigg said the family are very lucky to be alive.
"This house fire is a perfect example of why we stress the importance of smoke detectors. They save lives!"
"Houses are replaceable... lives aren't. If this family had no smoke detectors in their house, the outcome could have been deadly," he said.
The family were treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhilation.
Fire investigators are at the scene trying to determine the cause but CFA is treating it as not suspicious.
