Three people escaped uninjured after their Numurkah house caught fire early Tuesday morning.

About 30 firefighters from Numurkah, Shepparton, Waaia, Wunghnu, Katunga and Naring were called to the Queen Street house at 3am.

When crews arrived the single storey weatherboard house was well alight.

About three quarters of the house was damaged as the fire, which originated at the back of the property, spread throughout the house and the roof.

Numurkah Captain Jason Cox said the fire was brought under control in around 30 minutes but crews remained on scene for several hours working to black out hot spots.

“Given the possibility of re-ignition, we were on scene for a few hours making sure the embers were as cold as possible.

“The fire had also spread to the roof so we were doing internal and external attacks to extinguish it,” he said.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 5.20am. Fire investigators have been called to the scene to confirm the cause of the fire.

Captain Cox said while the occupants were able to escape the blaze their pet dog was killed in the fire.
