Recycling truck fire in Eltham

A $400,000 council recycling truck caught alight in Eltham North on Tuesday morning (12 June).

Crews from Eltham and Research arrived on-scene to find part of the vehicle's cargo - recycling waste which was collected from households earlier that morning - to be well alight.

After an initial knock-down of the fire, it was apparent that completely extinguishing the fire was going to be difficult with the waste compacted inside the vehicle.  A decision was made to offload the waste in a suitable location nearby, thus enabling crews to make sure the fire was completely blacked-out.

Nillumbik Council were extremely quick in their response, providing plant and additional waste trucks to help, and then cleaning up the soggy mess when fire operations had concluded.

Thanks to quick work by members, there was minimal damage to the expensive vehicle, which has since returned to service.
