Radio Interoperability

In collaboration with emergency management agencies across the State, it is our role to work together to protect the community. To enable better interoperability between agencies and in response to Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission (VBRC) recommendation 22, CFA’s communication network infrastructure and systems are being improved.

The aim of this project is to better support incident management personnel in their role. Radio networks between CFA and DSE are being standardised so they can deliver operational information to incident control centres (ICCs) and district headquarters.

A technical survey was recently completed at district headquarters and Level 3 ICCs. This allowed an understanding of the work CFA needs to do to bring the interconnectivity into each ICC.  A proof of concept system is scheduled to be deployed next year to ensure the two networks are interoperable prior to full deployment across the State.

Project Manager Simon Brown said, “Most of our work has been behind the scenes and it has been difficult to explain exactly what we’ve been doing. The proof of concept system, which will be deployed next year, will demonstrate the capabilities of the network and also reveal the possibilities for remote control and monitoring of incident management channels (IMCs) in the near future.”
