Firefighters saved the life of a small puppy after a fire started in its Wantirna South home.

Three CFA trucks from Boronia and Scoresby were called to the fire in Fraser Court at 3.10pm today (18 Sept).

The occupants weren't home at the time but firefighters found a puppy dog which was suffering smoke inhalation.

Firefighters treated the puppy with some oxygen and it has fully recovered.

CFA and Victoria Police are caring for the dog until the owners arrive home.

The fire was contained to one bedroom of the house but the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire investigators have been called to the scene. The fire is not believed to be suspicious.
