Portland hazmat incident

Smoke issuing from a liquid pitch leak at Portland has prompted CFA to advise residents in the town's northwest to close their doors and windows until the spill is controlled. (as of 8pm 18/2/12 - for latest advice see CFA website)

Nine CFA crews, including a hazardous materials (hazmat) unit from Warrnambool, are working to contain the leak of liquid pitch, used to produce asphalt, at an industrial plant at the port precinct.

CFA was called around 2.45 on Saturday afternoon after an outlet pipe attached to a 3000 tonne pitch tank ruptured.

By 5pm 250 tonnes of pitch had spilled, all of which has been contained to a bunded area.

Firefighters are cooling the material, heated to 200 °C, which then solidifies.

EPA and WorkSafe have been notified.
