Portland community meeting 8pm

A community meeting will be held at Portland's Fawthrop Centre in Hood Street at 8pm today (Wednesday 22 February) to update residents on the chemical spill at the Port.

A recovery vessel is enroute from Newcastle and is due to arrive in Portland this evening. 

It will take considerable time to transfer the contents of the  tank to the ship after its arrival.  CFA and other agencies will be performing works throughout the weekend.

Chemical vapours are not at harmful levels in Portland City however residents may experience a tar like odour. The air quality and wind direction is being monitored at regular intervals.  

Police request visitors and sightseers to keep away from the Battery Point area.

Anyone wishing to access the Port area will first be required to to obtain a permit from authorities at the Portland Fire Station.

There is no access for recreational aquatic activities or vessels in the port area.

The following road closures remain in place:

  • Lee Breakwater Road and Cliff Street
  • Findlay Road and Maderia Packet Road.
  • Southern end of the Lee Breakwater Road
  • Henty Highway and R B Anderson Street
