Firefighters from Olinda and Monbulk brigades arrived at the scene, on the Monbulk-Olinda Road, only minutes later.
A 17-year-old CFA volunteer, Brodie Leticq, was on the bus and assisted crews extinguish the blaze.
Brodie, who joined the Sassafras junior squad when he was 11, told the Herald Sun that 'six years of training just kicked in'.
