Managing wildfire risk to Victorian schools

A new and innovative project has been developed as a result of events occurring during the 2008-09 Fire Danger Period (FDP).

This project is to take up the opportunity of a request for assistance from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), to assist them with developing consistent, state wide assessment processes for the management of wildfire risk by Victorian schools and childminding centres.

As a result of the project, it is hoped that CFA and stakeholders will achieve the following benefits:

• Strong networks established between CFA and educational institutions
• A ‘FAST’ Emergency Management Plan for wildfire risk, for use by educational institutions

• Educational institutions will have a higher level of knowledge of wildfire risk treatments and these assessments will be consistent state wide

The processes used in the project will hopefully be able to be applied to other groups such as healthcare institutions, as required.
