The guide identifies what to do within defendable space to minimise risk of your garden contributing to house loss in a bushfire.
The corresponding online tool can also be found on the CFA website. The guide and online tool were both published in late November.
The official launch of the guide will occur at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show which runs from March 28 to April 1.
Industry experts such as fire ecologists, horticulturists, and a landscape architect were consulted as part of the process of developing the tool.
Kate Summons, Project Officer said the initiative helps to modify local bushfire risk around your property by landscaping an effective defendable space.
“Using the design principles will assist in reducing the risk of house loss. The most important thing to consider is the arrangement and location of plants. Individual flammability of the plants is also important but is not the only consideration.”
The Vegetation Management team is currently in the process of developing associated Landscaping for Bushfire brochures and fact sheets. They also hope to build a model garden in the future.
