On Thursday 5th July, over 150 people attended the official launch of Instant Suppression a book journaling the history of the Dundas Fire Brigades Group and its Member Brigades 1962 – 2012.

Generations of brigade members and their families, from throughout Dundas and neighbouring fire brigade groups filled the room at the Performing Arts Centre Hamilton, to take part in this significant event. This in itself showed the extreme respect for the historical journey being celebrated and the interest to be part of the future of Dundas Group of Brigades.

The book outlines the development of a large number of individual brigades located in the former Shire of Dundas, into a well organised and cohesive Group of volunteers. Dundas Group is situated in the Southern Grampians Shire and comprises of 18 Fire Brigades from Mooralla and Mirranatwa in the North to Branxholme and Gazette in the South.

CFA Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson, officially launched the book, by formally opening the first book published alongside of current Dundas Group Officer Bert Astbury, Author Betty Huf and Dundas Group History Leader, Hartley Nagorcka.

The Fire Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, although not able to formally attend, supplied a congratulatory video speech which was viewed by the attendees.

A moving speech was given by Kevin Thomas, former Group Officer from 1966 to 1997, who initiated the idea of this formal chronicle. Also speaking on the day were Group Officer Bert Astbury, Roger Hallam, John Diprose, Betty Huf and MC for the occasion was Dundas Group 4th DGO, Chips Menzel.

An extraordinary historical display of memorabilia and apparatus was organised by Jeff Nagorcka and Everard Linke and a formed wonderful backdrop to the launch.

A special thanks must go to CFA Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson and Author, Betty Huf, who signed approx. 100 books for those lucky enough to purchase on the day.

The Dundas Fire Brigade Group gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund and Public Record Office Victoria for making this project possible. Funding for the publication of the book was received from the Brigades of the Dundas Group and the Shire of Southern Grampians Government Grant.

Copies of the book can be purchased from the CFA District 5 Headquarters on Coleraine Road, Hamilton, online at buyitlocal.com.au/instant-suppression or by contacting Dundas Group Secretary, Rayleigh Vandermost on 0409 711 421.
