The fitness program set up by Gavin is designed to increase the general fitness and strength of members, to help members continue to provide an excellent service to the Hamilton Community. Gavin is conducting this program free of charge as a way of giving back to the brigade. “The support that Gavin has given the brigade by providing this program free is a great initiative and one that members are very grateful for. I look forward to completing the six weeks and feeling healthier and fitter because of it.” 4th Lt Peter Wall said.
Members will be going to the gym 3 times a week during the 6 week period with a fitness test done at week 1, 3 and 6 to track the improvements that they have achieved. As the brigade and members go through this program different members will provide a short report and up to date on CFA Connect each week starting with.
1st Lt Malcolm Anderson: Day one - whilst a little hesitant given the early start (0600hrs - no sun and the moon was still up!) it was great to see the number of brigade members arrive at the gym. It is a great opportunity for us to improving our health in a supportive way - with a little peer group encouragement. A big thanks to Gavin for his challenge to the brigade and support through offering us the 6 weeks free training and guidance. It can only help us to become fitter and closer as a team - hopefully more members will join in - it’s not too late.
Fire Fighter Rayleigh Vandermost: Day one - 5.55am and in the car on the way to first gym workout with the brigade. Without even doing one push up, this is already a huge step forward for me. I had to search through the bottom of the cupboard last night and dust off the runners. Doesn’t matter what I look like, the brushed teeth, washed face and hair up in a pony tail is a far cry from what my usual look is turning out to meet the rest of the brigade at this hour. It’s usually to a fire call. ___, I forgot the pager. Oh well, somebody will have one there. I walk into a bright room, filled with what looks like torture devices and I am greeted with the smiling faces of my fellow fire fighters, suddenly my mood gets a little better. After half an hour of not too bad foreign movement, one session down, seventeen more to go….
Next update Monday 23rd July
