CFA and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) advise that a number of bushfires have occurred today (Tuesday), with one of these continuing to burn in East Gippsland near Nowa Nowa.

Regional Controller, Mark Reid said this bushfire east of Nowa Nowa has burnt approximately 2,500 hectares of grassland and bush.

“Emergency warnings are current for the communities of Jarrahmond, Newmeralla, Waygara, Bete Bolong North, Corringle, Simpsons Creek, Wombat Creek, Bete Bolong and Tostaree,” he said.

“Other bushfires have occurred today at Inverloch, south of Licola and east of Yarram,” Mr Reid said.

“These fires have now been contained and CFA and DSE crews will patrol them overnight. It is expected that smoke will be present for a number of days in the areas surrounding these fires.”

The fire that is burning east of Nowa Nowa is continuing to impact on private property.

Mr Reid said it is critical for all residents in close proximity to this bushfire to enact their bushfire survival plans immediately. There are reports being received of property losses as a result of this bushfire.

“I want to remind Gippsland communities that while there has been rainfall in other parts of Victoria, Gippsland has not benefited from this and all residents need to continue to plan for bushfire.”
