A major gas leak at the Safeway petrol station was reported to the fire brigade at 1.45pm this afternoon (10 June).
Autobarn, Safeway fuel and Aldi were ordered to close their businesses for safety reasons. Brigade OIC and incident controller Kim O'Connor quickly isolated the area and asked for the CFA's hazmat detection vehicle from Dandenong to attend to help monitor the large leak.
Firefighters were checking all drains in the area to see if the gas had moved down hill from the incident. The leak was contained to the Autobarn/fuel station complex.
Just on 5pm a specialist gas maintenance technician started work on sealing the leak, and at 6pm the area was deemed safe and all roads were open.
The fuel station remained closed for the rest of the night while the technician replaced the faulty part. Captain Kim O'Connor praised his members on an outstanding effort put in for the afternoon.
Wonthaggi was supported by the following: Dandenong Fire Brigade's hazmat detection vehicle, Bass Coast Shire Emergency Management Officer James Bremner, Victoria Police.
