A gas leak in Upwey has been declared safe.

CFA crews from Belgrave and Upwey were called to the incident in Ferndale Avenue about 10.50am where workers in the area had accidentally hit a 50 mm gas main.

Operations Officer Graeme Bourne said crews had helped to contain the leak with water until the gas company arrived on scene and the incident was called under control at 1.00pm.

He said an Advice message was issued to notify residents in the immediate area of a smell of gas but said there was minimal risk to the community.
