Dandenong and Hallam fire brigades responded to a smoke alarm at a factory in Stephens Road Dandenong South on Sunday morning around 9.15am.

Thick fog had enveloped the area and crews could not see the smoke or factory until they were within 50m of the site. Once there they found machinery within the glass recycling plant well alight impinging on to the roof area.

An aerial appliance (Dandenong ladder platform) and an additional pumper responded when Senior Station Officer Rick Owen completed his size-up of the fire.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus cut through a steel roller door with a quickcut saw to get access to the seat of the fire. Specialist vehicles from Scoresby (hose layer) and Frankston (BA van) also responded to assist crews on scene. The fire was contained within 40 minutes. Twenty five firefighters attended and left the scene around 1.00pm that afternoon.

The Incident Controller was Senior Station Officer Rick Owen from Dandenong Fire Brigade. The cause of the fire is being investigated but was not deemed suspicious.
