Fire under investigation

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire in Greensborough.

District 14 Operations Officer Phil Peacock said while the cause of the Civic Drive blaze is still unknown, the fire has been deemed not suspicious.

“We will continue the investigation and should have more idea of a cause this afternoon,” he said.

CFA was called to the fire at the back of the Nillumbik Shire Council offices about 6.25am today (Wednesday 15 June).

OO Peacock said the building was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

“It was a long portable building of about 20m by 40m,” he said.

“It is believed at this stage, the portable was being used as temporary office space as the Shire’s main building was undergoing some renovations.”

OO Peacock said more than 30 CFA firefighters worked to battle the blaze, which was called under control at 8.16am.

“We also had crews from MFB on scene and it was a great cooperation between both agencies,” he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, however, an investigation will be undertaken this morning.

Nillumbik Shire Council has temporarily closed today due to the fire.

It said limited services will be available and all customer telephone enquiries will be diverted to the Operations Centre in Plenty.

Further updates from the Council will be provided throughout the day and will be posted on their website as they become available.
