Fire Investigation Conference

Over thirty (30) CFA Fire Investigators from across the state recently had the opportunity to attend the Australasian Association of Fire Investigators (AAFI) Conference that was held in Melbourne on 19 to 21 September 2012.

The theme for the conference was “Fire Investigation in Australasia: The Way Forward”.

The conference participants heard from International and National presenters on a range of topics relating to Fire Investigation and Arson Prevention and Reduction Strategies.

On the first day of the conference the following topics were presented:

  • Fire Investigation – United Kingdom Perspective
  • Arson Prevention Strategies in the United Kingdom
  • Victoria Police Strategic Direction – Arson Policing Strategy
  • Fire and Police Integration Strategies
  • Confronting Serial Arson - Psychology of Serial Fire-setting
  • Victorian Fire Services Commissioner and Fire Investigation
  • Situational Awareness Technology for Emergency Management
  • Energy Safe Victoria’s Strategies for Electrical Safety

As part of the conference dinner the conference key note speaker, Mr Peter Mansi, provided an interesting presentation on the London Riots that occurred in 2011 from a London Fire Service and Fire Investigation perspective.

On the second day of the conference the following topics were presented:

  • Fire Investigation Case Study relating to the fatal Tamahere Cool Store Fire in New Zealand
  • Interactive Brief prepared by Victoria Police Phoenix Taskforce for the investigation into the Black Saturday 2009 Fires
  • Fire Investigation in Courts
  • Presenting Evidence in a Court of Law
  • Insurance Loss Adjustors involvement in Fire Investigation
  • Fire Investigation in the Private Industry
  • Financial Ombudsman Service involvement in Fire Investigation

By attending the conference, the CFA Fire Investigators were able to obtain the latest information and knowledge in the area of fire investigation and arson reduction strategies.

The conference also provided an opportunity for CFA Fire Investigators to network with other Fire Investigators from Australian and International Fire Service Fire Investigation Units.
