The cause of a fire which destroyed a historic hotel at Tallygaroopna, north of Shepparton overnight, is being investigated.

11 CFA trucks from Tallygaroopna, Shepparton, Katandra, Kaarimba, Wunghnu, Drumanure and Cosgrove and Pine Lodge attended the large fire around 7.45pm. The pub had just closed and no-one was in the building.

When crews arrived, the 120 year old wooden building was already well alight. It took almost an hour and half to bring under control.

Firefighters monitored the scene throughout the night - fire investigators attended this morning (Tuesday, 1 May).

The hotel had only just reopened after being extensively damaged by flood earlier this year.
