In searing temperatures and high humidity, the Drouin-Bunyip competition team won the 2012 Eastern Districts Fire Brigades Association (EDFBA) championships for the first time in the event's 80-year history.

More than 200 firefighters representing 24 teams gathered in Koo Wee Rup over the Australia Day weekend for two days of fierce urban firefighting competitions. This was one of the largest fire brigade competition meets before the 2012 VFBV State Urban Championships, to be hosted in Mooroopna on 10-12 March.

Maryvale competition team was pipped at the post in the final event after holding the lead for most of the weekend, with the Champion Fours event providing a suspenseful finale for all spectators and competitors.

“It was terrific to see that the camaraderie and fellowship between teams rose above the intense competitive spirit between brigades. It was pleasing to be able to join the Chairman, Chief Officer, Regional personnel and VFBV officials at the event to witness the high calibre of competitions,” said CFA's Executive Director of Operational Training and Volunteerism, Lex de Man.

An official Australia Day Medal for achievement in sport was awarded to Stuart Kelsey, who joined CFA in 1988 through junior championships before becoming an active firefighter and senior runner. Stuart is now the coach of the very successful Drouin-Bunyip competition team and is renowned for being a fair and ethical ambassador within the sport, leading his team by example with wisdom and integrity. His mentorship of many younger runners has also contributed to the longevity of this sport.

There was terrific support from members, their families and the broader public; a testament to the Koo Wee Rup Fire Brigade who hosted the championships under the leadership of First Lieutenant Craig Lansdown.

"Only positive comments have been made in regards to the brigade’s professionalism, organisation and excellent use of all members of the brigade at Koo Wee Rup – firefighters, auxiliary and junior members," said EDFBA President Peter Dewsbury.

Mr Dewsbury also commented that everywhere you looked there was "someone with a blue ‘Koo Wee Rup 188’ shirt to assist".

Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) Acting Executive Officer Timothy Desmond said, "I'd take this opportunity to congratulate the local committee and acknowledge all of the behind-the-scenes work that went unnoticed to ensure a successful event.

"The Koo Wee Rup fire brigade rightfully should stand proud to know that all their hard work has paid off, and many from across the organisation - including the CFA Chairman, Chief Officer and local management - have all made positive comments on the brigade’s abilities."
