More than 70 firefighters battled a large grass fire north of Clunes on Monday, which burnt out 20 hectares of grassland.

CFA District 15 Operations Officer Mal Jones said 12 tankers were sent to fight the blaze, which erupted near an old quarry just after 5pm.

He said crews took some time to contain the fire, which was listed as “out of control” for more than an hour.

“This one actually took them a little while – probably two hours for it to be brought fully under control,” he said. “It was definitely one of the bigger ones we’ve had lately.”

Mr Jones said Delilah the Erickson air crane was on hand to help ground crews, filling up with water at nearby farm dams and dumping it to halt the spread of flames.
