Last night’s Q&A with the Chief attracted some great questions about mentoring and leadership, and is available for replay.

The Chief’s previous session about Personal Protective Clothing has attracted over 700 replays already.

Stay tuned for the next online Q&A session which will be held at 6pm Wednesday 30 May.

The Chief answered some great questions, including:

Comment From tom

"With the board looking at a new way of conducting elections, Is there possibility at having a system like the SES where regional officers take applications for the role and then picked after applications?"

Comment From Randall Bacon:

"Hi Euan thanks for communicating. Do you think that the structure of Captains LT's BMT in it's current format is the system we need going forward or do you have some changes in mind or a complete revamp of how we elect our operational officers?"

Comment From Wayne:

"Euan - have we gone too far in relation to 'volunteerism'? As a volunteer at a large integrated brigade, the reality of CFA is that it is an integrated organisation, not just a volunteer one. Whilst at a grass roots level volunteers and career firefighters make the relationship work, some recent actions are slowly driving a wedge between the groups in the background. Posters on 'volunteers training volunteers', the apparent reluctance of CFA to use the term 'professional' and just using 'paid' when referring to staff firefighters shows some worrying signs. Your thoughts?"

Comment From Keith Purchase D12:

"G'Evening Euan, Its good to see the use of TEWTS re-emerging once again as a learning aid for new brigade and group Officers. This was used many years ago in D12 with great success but died when the CFA took over training.. Good to see your revamping of many old and effective stratagies and ideas disregarded as old and not current."

extract from The Red Book....leadership is somthing more than a keen eye , an impressive manner or a friendly smile .The ability to lead others in a particular situation depends not only on a knowledge and experience of the factors involved in the situation but also on the personal trust which inspires members of groups to blend their individual skills and energies into a co-operative effort. The leader is not a passive person . he is not someone whose main function is to be "up the front ".Leadership is a working relationship among members of a group in which the leader acquires status through active participation and demonstration of his capacity for carring out co -operative tasks through to completion. This and many more examples of leadership qualities are expanded in this book that has been around for thirty odd years ...
