Chief Officer Euan Ferguson will host an online Q & A session at 6pm tonight to discuss the importance of mentoring and leadership amongst our volunteers.

The Chief has also asked: As CFA works to implement the themes of the Jones Inquiry, what more can we as an organisation do to encourage and enhance the ethos and culture of volunteering?

You can submit questions before the session by emailing onlineforum@cfa.vic.gov.au, or just login below and ask them during the chat.

THE ONLINE Q & A WILL BE TAKING PLACE IN THE WINDOW BELOW:

Questions received so far include:

Question from Peter Rennie, Smythesdale Brigade:

What can CFA management do to ensure that Brigade Training Offices make Leadership courses available to all volunteers? In some Brigades there seems to be a culture of not making courses available to newer members due to a fear that the newer members will return knowing more than those who have been around for years.

Question from Randall Bacon, Halls Gap Brigade:

I am concerned with an equitable workplace where brigade, group and district leaders understand and are pro-active in relationships and diversity with all members within their influence. In my area and my experience, I have found my local CFA to be only re-active when complains-questions or problems rear their head and as long as they dot the i’s and cross the t’s all is forgotten.

I ask you what district performance based indicator plans have you or could you established? Whereby complaints-questions-and problems whether verbal or written are recorded, dealt with and given feedback to give the average member a feeling of confidence in their leadership and the encouragement to stay around and keep being involved.

Question from Trevor Lowan, Nhill / Lowan Group:

The area where I live has a limited amount of vols as does many rural areas. I have found that the Media / CFA incidents has raised CFA profile across the state.  According to Dr Judy Esmond, who was at last year’s AFAC conference Marketing is alive and well, and Recruitment is also assisted by the Media. Goal setting is done well at Brigade level, though training and incident response.  As Chief Officer I commend your constant Recognition of the role of volunteers in CFA.  My question is how can we raise the recognition / validation aspect of CFA vols, especially in the eyes of the media?  I have noticed that a couple of stations eg Hamilton & Nhill have signs that say “100 % volunteers” to address this issue. Thank you for this opportunity. Trev Lowan GO

extract from The Red Book....leadership is somthing more than a keen eye , an impressive manner or a friendly smile .The ability to lead others in a particular situation depends not only on a knowledge and experience of the factors involved in the situation but also on the personal trust which inspires members of groups to blend their individual skills and energies into a co-operative effort. The leader is not a passive person . he is not someone whose main function is to be "up the front ".Leadership is a working relationship among members of a group in which the leader acquires status through active participation and demonstration of his capacity for carrting co -operative tasks through to completion. This and many more examples of leadership qualities are expanded in this book that has been around for thirty odd years ...
