On the eve of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, CFA member Peter Lucas attended the Fire Department New York’s memorial service at St Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Avenue, New York City.

He describes the service and the immense loss to the city’s fire department from that day.

Yesterday, 10 September, saw the FDNY’s memorial service held for the FDNY families who lost a firefighter in the tragedy. The service began with 343 American flags individually paraded into the cathedral.

At the service’s opening it was outlined that on that day FDNY lost 4,400 collective years of service and the common theme re-emerged that 9/11’s lessons are cause for us all… to rededicate ourselves to the challenge of keeping our cities safe.

The speeches throughout the event were heartfelt and delivered by those directly impacted. One story described how three 9/11 firefighters wrote their names on a grimy window of a city Cathedral that was due to be replaced during the Cathedral’s renovation. All three of these firefighters were lost in the attack on the World Trade Centre and the window that bears their names has now been preserved as part of 9/11 history.
