Protecting life and property is the highest priority for CFA. The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission (VBRC) highlighted the important role our warning systems play in achieving this objective. In response to this, CFA has implemented an advanced warning system known as the One Source One Message (OSOM) tool.

OSOM has been widely embraced by Victorian emergency services and the community. With such a growing reliance on information and warnings provided by the service, it’s critical to ensure the infrastructure that supports the service is reliable.

The Systems Monitoring Dashboard (SMD) was built for proactive systems management at CFA; in particular monitoring critical components of OSOM. The dashboard provides a high level view of all CFA systems to ensure OSOM is working to its full capacity at all times.

The official monitoring system went live on 1 November 2011 in time for the fire season. The tool actively monitors the infrastructure from the moment messages are received by CFA until they reach the public website.

Executive Manager Technology Services, Michael Foreshew, said the SMD is essential to fulfil our role of protecting life and property.

“Having a high-level view of how the systems are working at all times gives us assurance that they are robust and reliable at times when we need them the most.”

“The next and final milestone for the systems monitoring dashboard project team is an increased level of monitoring, which is set for April this year. The functionality will be enhanced with the inclusion of monitoring all servers and networking devices in the CFA network,” he said.
