The analysis confirmed that CFA’s experience in dealing with major disasters is consistent with similar organisations in similar circumstances. While many people have strong psychological resilience and coping skills, the research suggests that exposure to major disasters such as the February 2009 fires is likely to lead to increases in some mental health difficulties and behavioural or interpersonal issues such as conflict.
The research has confirmed CFA’s experiences as highly consistent with that of other emergency services in that the highest level of mental health and behavioural issues present in the first 1to 2 years following the disaster and that presentation of these issues gradually decline thereafter.
It is critically important to note however, that if left untreated, elevated levels of mental health and behavioural issues will be likely to persist.
CFA strives to provide Welfare Services to its members and their immediate families that are practical, of a high quality and innovative.
A commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of our members has been embedded in the organisation for over 20 years now and the research confirms the importance of having a range of welfare services provided in a continuous manner and over extended periods. That commitment has been in part due to the vigilance and support that CFA members show in looking out for each other. If you, a member of your family or brigade/work group is struggling, please encourage them to access support.
