CFA has been named a finalist in two categories of the 2012 Australian Government ICT Awards.

CFA, in collaboration with other Victorian fire and flood services, is a finalist in the Excellence in eGovernment Awards, recognising the most outstanding initiatives in eGovernment across five ICT disciplines.

From the AGIMO website:

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has made significant advances in its use of social media for emergency warning and provision of advice during major incidents. All CFA social media channels have being integrated into a ‘One Source, One Message’ system so warnings are now posted automatically 24/7 to official social media channels as soon as they are issued. As part of this initiative CFA now works directly with specifically appointed staff in the State Control Centre to gather intelligence from the online community during major emergencies. CFA’s work in this area has allowed a much quicker response to communication issues and provided valuable intelligence back into official emergency management structures.

Martin Anderson, CFA's Digital Media Manager, is also one of three finalists in the Government 2.0 Innovator Award, recognising outstanding practice by an individual in the use and impact of Government 2.0 tools.

From the AGIMO website:

As Country Fire Authority’s Digital Media Manager, Martin has played a critical role in the application of Gov 2.0 principles within Victoria’s emergency services. His passion for creating a more open, honest and transparent approach to emergency communications has led to significant achievements, including integrating social media into official Victorian warning systems, incorporating online community engagement and social media intelligence gathering into State Control Centre procedures, and opening up geocoded emergency warnings data to independent developers. Martin has displayed superior leadership skills and exceptional performance to gain support and acceptance to achieve these major successes.

On being named a finalist, Martin acknowledges that it was very much a multi-agency effort to establish social media in the State Control Centre, and a great example of agencies working together.
