Brigade response was ride on

A ride-on lawnmower sparked a blaze yesterday afternoon at Sandy Creek, burning through three hectares on a private property.

District 24 Operations Officer Mark Owens said that the grass fire was caused by either a mechanical failure or a build-up of fuel inside the mower.

“The fire got up and ran quickly despite the mild conditions and boggy ground," he said.

The soft ground created some hassle for the attending crews from Sandy Creek, Kiewa, Tallangata and Kergunyah brigades with three fire trucks becoming bogged.

A number of vehicles were required to extract one of the appliances from the mud.
