Brigade doorknock has Broad appeal

Members of Broadford Fire Brigade pounded the pavements last week in an effort to boost fire awareness, with more than 50 households in the Davis - Elliot Rd area of Broadford receiving a knock on the door last week.

Residents were invited to a Fire Ready meeting, given copies of this season’s Fire Ready Kit and encouraged to book a home bushfire assessment visit.

The results – stemming from the hard work of five brigade members who spent a combined total of 25 hours doorknocking - speak for themselves.

Around 60 people attended last Sunday’s streetside meeting, a ten-fold improvement on the last FireReady meeting held in November.

Broadford member Jay Martin said that the brigade had decided to move away from the town hall style of meeting and come out to where the rural properties are.

“We are absolutely stoked to have had such a strong turnout – we reckon that between the Fire Ready meetings and home advice visits we will have reached more than half the population for that area of Broadford.

“And if we make a difference for even ten per cent of those people then it is all worthwhile,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin added that it was fantastic to see so many locals exchanging phone numbers at last Monday’s meeting.

“A lot of the people living up around this area now have moved here in the last five or so years.  There’s a strong commuter base, people come up here to live on large lifestyle properties but many struggle to know their neighbours, even if they’d like to.

“The best way you’re going to know about a fire in your area is through your neighbours – it’s so important to keep building your local network,” Mr Martin said.

Two more FireReady Victoria meetings have been scheduled for this coming Sunday:

  1. Intersection of Sugarloaf Creek Rd & Sunday Creek Lane Broadford - Jan 29th @ 10am
  2. Intersection of Jefferys Lane & Three Chain Rd, Broadford - Jan 29th @ 12pm

A CFA marquee and vehicles will be set up at the Australia Day celebrations in Broadford on Jan 26th. Residents can book a Home Bushfire Advice visit directly through a CFA member at the event, as part of a Home Bushfire Advice Service campaign currently targeting the townships of Broadford, Kilmore, Clonbinane, Tallarook and Toobarac.
