A B-Double fuel tanker has caught fire after hitting a kangaroo around 3 km south of Nagambie on the Goulburn Valley Highway.

The incident occurred at 5:20 am this morning (Sunday 30 Sept) and has resulted in the highway being blocked in both directions.

Fortunately the driver of the truck has escaped serious injury and had attempted to extinguish the fire without success. He has been treated by paramedics onscene.

CFA crews have just brought the incident under control and are using foam to help contain the fire with 16 firefighting vehicles onscene.

Police are redirecting traffic away from the incident.

Update: 11:30am. Tree loppers are onscene clearing the area, Worksafe have attended and fire crews are still cooling down the remainder of the tanks prior to decanting.

Update: 4:30pm. Part 1 of 6 fuel tanks to be decanted complete.

Update: 9:00pm. Truck has been loaded for removal. Roadway to be cleaned up and expected to be re-opened by 10:30pm.
