By Rose Young, 1st Lieutenant Cann Valley Rural Fire Brigade.

On Sunday 22 April 2012, Cann Valley Rural Fire Brigade was privileged to attend an award ceremony at Cann Valley Fire Station, to congratulate Mr Ian Brownlie of Cann River.

Ian was awarded a medal for being a member of the Cann Valley brigade for over 50 years. The award was presented by Mr Miles Malcolm, Operations Officer at District 11 headquarters, Bairnsdale.

In Ian’s acceptance speech, he spoke of the changes in firefighting equipment and techniques from times past to the present, and thanked all members for a memorable 50 years of firefighting in the Cann Valley area.

Cann Valley brigade also awarded Mr R. Peter Stubbs with his 15-year badge.

Once again, a mammoth effort in any small community to retain such well-trained and community-minded men to protect our area from fire.
