The tool will primarily consider the physical aspects of the property, namely vegetation and slope and provide an evaluation of the defendable space around their home. The second element of the tool will consider the availability of key resources to defend their home such as a dedicated water supply and will explore the physical and psychological capacity of the household.
Community Safety will provide CFA staff and volunteers with information so they can assist residents in the use of the tool and provide further support for bushfire survival planning by directing residents to other key resources.
In the meantime, if CFA staff or volunteers are approached by the community seeking information or advice around home ‘defendability’, they can inform the community that the self assessment tool will be available to them in October.
The tool will be available online, on cd rom and in hard copy for those who do not have internet or computer access.
The project manager is working with Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) to ensure information about the tool reaches volunteers in an appropriate and timely manner.
