Miracles of Modern Technology

RJHB Published in WirelessTwittertechnologyApp by RJHB | Comment (1)
The miracles of modern technology never cease to amaze me
We were flying to Dallas Texas that morning for my sons wedding the grand children were coming with us so we had loaded up with all sorts of technology to keep them entertained
Surprisingly they slept most of the way
The night before I  packed up my turnout gear to be sent of for cleaning yet I still hadn't turned of the pager
The car arrived to take us to the airport so the pager was switched off I was no longer on call my link to what was going on in our patch had been silenced (My wife thought it was a good thing)
We arrived safely in Dallas after some 16 hours in the air that in itself is a modern miracle
America the land of the free Wi Fi every where we went you could be connected shopping centers,  coffee shops
We settled in and got used to driving on the wrong side of the road
The Sat Nav getting a good workout (We still got lost) still quite amazing how it all works
Sitting in a Mc Donald's for lunch one day with the Grandchildren  the CFA Fire Ready App went ping on the iPad  (I had previously set up an alert for my area)
It was interesting to see that the application worked some 14 thousand miles away
I logged on to  CFA Online sure enough Doreen had been paged I flicked over to the Scanner App that had been recommended to me by the Comms Officer
We sat there listening to the turnout by the 1st Lieutenant and followed the job all the way through to the conclusion
So there I was in a Mc Donald's in Dallas Texas listening to what was happening  back in Doreen Victoria Australia
I decided I would post a message on the Doreen CFA Facebook page congratulating  the team on the excellent radio work and a job well done
A message came back that perhaps I should be enjoying my Holidays

I took their advice but the technology available to us still amazes me
In closing I highly recommend the CFA app and wish to congratulate all those involved in developing it

Vehicle livery, wellbeing research, Citation for Courage

Euan Ferguson Published in Welfare and WellbeingCommunity Engagement2012/13 Fire Season by Euan Ferguson | Comment (0)

Wellbeing Research:
CFA's Welfare Services provides support to members and their immediate families to deal with potentially distressing events.  This can be for both CFA related issues and individual personal issues.  CFA would like to know about your experience of Welfare Services and so we're conducting some research.  The findings of this research will be used to inform improvements to Welfare Services. They will also be used to help inform education programs that support psychological preparation for potentially distressing events.  This research feedback questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.  A sample of the questionnaires has been sent to every Brigade Secretary in the state so it's likely you might already know about the Wellbeing Research.  We encourage you to complete the questionnaire online. You can also contact your local HRM or Peer Coordinator to obtain more paper copies.  If you have questions about this research, you can contact the hotline on 03 8822 8118.

Upgrades to Field Training Grounds, Kinglake brigade

deman Published in Field Training GroundsBlack Saturday by deman | Comment (0)
We have just concluded a two day workshop to discuss and plan for the transition of the Field Training Grounds from Regional management to OT&V.  PAD Operators, representatives of Regional Directors and Managers Training & Development attended the workshop and provided various perspectives of how best to move to the new arrangements.  Phase 1 of the program will see the formal cut over of the FTG's to OT&V on the 3rd of December.  At that point all FTG staff will come under the management of OT&V.  The full transition will continue to be phased in over the first part of 2013.  The key areas of focus under OT&V will include: a review and update of OHS practices and procedures; the introduction of standardised environmental management plans and systems; and improved asset management and replacement plans to ensure long term sustainability of the facilities.

National Emergency Medal, DSE Chief Fire Officer Ewan Waller retires

Euan Ferguson Published in National Emergency Medal by Euan Ferguson | Comment (0)

National Emergency Medal Presentation:
On Sunday 9th September, I had the honour of attending the presentation of National Emergency Medals to a further 27 recipients at the Whittlesea Fire Station.  The motor room of the station was filled with recipients, their supporters, friends and families.  The mood was one of reserved pride, reflection and emotion.  Here are the words I said as part of the ceremony:  "The summer of 2009 saw prolonged drought.  Across much of the scenic and serene countryside, the bushfire risk was unprecedented.  Across Victoria, communities went about their business with the threat of something ominous about to happen.  The bushfires came:  extensive, intense, all powerful and all consuming.  Merciless and unforgiving to those caught in their path.  Across Victoria, in brigades, small crews, strike teams, task forces and incident management teams, men and women united to confront the common threat of bushfire. In conditions that were difficult and dangerous - "Extreme" in every sense of the word - you did your best.  In the face of nature's wrath, you stood fast.  You gave your all.  Many of you risked your life to save the lives of others.  Some of you lost your own - your property, your livelihood, your friends and your family - whilst protecting others.  Your selfless service, devotion to duty, your courage and your leadership serves as an example that will inspire others for generations.  You have earned the respect of a grateful community.  You epitomise the spirit of Australia and the spirit of CFA.  To each and every one of you, and to the many others who are not here today, I say "Thank you - Job well done!"  Your efforts will forevermore be etched in the proud history of this great State.  Thank you. I salute you all."  We thank the Whittlesea Fire Brigade for hosting the event and the Narre Warren Fire Brigade for their wonderful catering.
