Online training launched

deman Published in trainingtechnologyJones inquiry by deman

At the Foster fire station in South Gippsland today, we launched a set of new and innovative ‘online' programs and other products that's going to make the delivery and maintenance of CFA training a lot more accessible from now on.

The training initiatives include:

• Skills Maintenance Drills Folder - This provides a series of drills that will assist brigades plan and conduct training relevant to their community risk profile.
• WebTRAIN - A web-based program to record and maintain members' training online.
• Training Materials Online - Current endorsed training materials online.
• Emergency Services Off-Road Driving DVD - Joint emergency services DVD providing practical advice on how to deal with a range of routine hazards for driving in adverse conditions.

These new initiatives we've developed I'd point out have occurred with significant input from our volunteers.

Importantly these training aids will assist brigades to access the latest learning materials, simplify the delivery of skills maintenance training, as well as the recording of that training through the use of the online system.

This suite of new initiatives includes a program which provides each member with the opportunity to access current endorsed training materials online.

As part of the WebTRAIN system, members' training can be conveniently, accurately and efficiently recorded, assisting brigades to monitor the maintenance of members' skills.

And by the way it's important to note that these new on line products are not about replacing any practical training - it is simply another means to which we can offer additional and accessible training to our members.
Rollout of WebTRAIN and the Skills Maintenance Drills Folder across all CFA Regions will be completed by 30 June this year.

The new online training initiatives and products reflect the outcomes of recommendations from the Jones Inquiry which investigated the effect of arrangements of CFA volunteers. The Inquiry gave a voice to volunteers and it provided valuable recommendations for the future of the organisation.

CFA relies on the skills of our volunteers and paid staff, which is why it is vital the organisation is continually building on and improving the way it delivers and provides training to members. And that then ensures we're delivering a highly skilled and professional service to the Victorian community.

This seems like a great idea. The problem will be getting the records that exist into some kind of accurate format since the original TRAIN database was one that would have been laughed out of any real business venture!

It looks great Lex - thank you. We have been using something quite similar but not a extensively linked to the CFA databases as this. I am looking forward to using it ASAP so we don't get further behind in recording skills maintenance. Is there any way to get the Drills folder before 30 June?

A quick look suggests the records as they currently exist are quite incomplete, even in some critical areas. I suspect that is partly the result of inadequate recording at brigade level and partly from significant central record keeping deficiencies.

So with all these online training tools now avilable is the CFA now going to install internet into all the fire stations or are the brigades expected to foot that cost.

Hi Claire , not sure if your the person to ask , however as you have a place on the board its seems your view would be very interisting , my Brigade i soon to have a new Fire Station built , the plans are drawn andit's on the way , i have asked at Brigade meetings about the fine details such as Is the new shed having Solar hot water installed , is there achance that Solar will be included to show best practice to the community , tank water will be used as this is the only source of water , How much imput do brigades have in the planning of new and existing Fire Stations , is the Green thinking of CFA being encouraged at all levels , is there any discussion or documents on Fire Station Design that Brigades could look at in regards to a more green and efficient CFA
Thanks will be most interested in your thoughts .
At this time I have not had a reply to the above mentioned issues , however in a very small rural Brigade small advances are huge steps , as some of the above respondants have stated we should be able in this day and age get new fire stations buith with the bells and whistles of a larger urban brigade , the costs when setting up from a open canvase should strive to include best practice , the use of the internet is as basic as the home telephone was 40 years ago , the internet in its most basic form is how we do business , every volunteer that uses their own internet to access the CFA do it at their own cost , lets make the leap of faith and install the internet in every fire station that wants it , the real cost will still in the long run be born by the community that we serve , has the cost of a Brigade member ever been worked out , I am sure when it is it will still represent excellent value for money .
