No signs of slowing down

Lisa Sturzenegger Published in Social mediaRelay for LifeFireReady RoadshowFire Australia Conference by Lisa Sturzenegger
It's been an extremely busy and rewarding time for everyone in Community Safety - and things aren't showing any signs of slowing down.

I had the opportunity to present at the Fire Australia Conference about the great work we're doing, in particular how we're using technology to better connect with our communities.

Our Household Bushfire Self-Assessment Tool, Customer Relations System and the One Source One Message System all featured in my presentation as ways we are using technology to keep people informed and engaged.

People also showed a real interest in the work we're doing online, using CFA Connect and social media to entice people into a relationship with CFA and break down communication barriers. We've even begun conducting bushfire safety meetings online, making us leaders in this field.

It was great to network with the other agencies and discuss what we're doing, which will bring benefits to not just our communities but the entire country. It was even better to come home three days later and participate in the Relay for Life event, which reminded me what a dynamic and passionate organisation I work for.

The CFA team managed to raise around $2800 for the Cancer Council during the twenty-four hour race, and our team included kids as well as firefighters who had come straight from a night shift.

Seeing the level of camaraderie between our staff, volunteers and other agencies made me feel a tremendous sense of pride for our people, and it's clear that the camaraderie of our members spills out into the community and the work we do.

This event made me realise that some of the best communication we do is, and will always be, the face-to-face community engagement work done by our Brigades.

I'm also proud to say that our volunteers are embracing bushfire survival plans - which came across at the recent ABC Fire Awareness Day event. Captain John Schauble as well as volunteers Sam Reaper, Roy Peterson and Dale Ross spoke beautifully on the radio and it was clear that everyone - from junior to senior members - had taken on the importance of having a bushfire survival plan.

We will continue to promote the importance of having a bushfire survival plan at the FireReady Roadshow, which will visit its first community event on Saturday - the Warrandyte Community Market.

The schedule for the FireReady Roadshow was developed by government and focuses on local community events such as markets and festivals, to attract foot traffic. These events will be great opportunities for Brigades to engage new audiences and also network with other local agencies.

I strongly encourage you to visit the CFA website and find out where the FireReady Roadshow is visiting - I'll also make sure I keep you up-to-date with the Roadshow's progress through my Twitter account (@LisaCFA).

Finally - I'd like to extend a heartfelt welcome to Euan Ferguson. I've worked with Euan at a national level for a number of years now, working with him to develop the Fire Danger Rating system, and he is already proving to be a real asset to the team.

A Question for Lisa
written by Andrew Gallagher, December 09, 2010
hi Lisa, I noticed the following quote in your blog "People also showed a real interest in the work we're doing online, using CFA Connect and social media to entice people into a relationship with CFA and break down communication barriers."

Just wondering how you juggle the balance between "enticing a relationship with CFA" and enticing a relationship with local brigade? It would seem to me that a move to a centralised model of engagement is effective for some members of the community in some instances but given culture of the organisation and the places it operates then the centralised model may be a detriment to CFA brand and local engagement "if the centralised model has more focus than the local direct model". I'd be interested in your views on how you balance the two, and any views you have on how CFA Connect (particularly web 2.0 features) can be used to enhance local brigade links to community? Cheers and Thanks

Hi Andrew

I appreciate you taking the time to read my blog and thank you for your thought provoking questions. With our social media tools we are generally develop a relationship with those who now prefer to communicate online rather than via the more traditional methods. Whether we like it or not, many people are feeling that they don’t have time for face-to-face activities.

Social media has become a new way of communicating for Generation Y and even Generation X, with other generations following behind. As it’s now bneing used so widely, we need to try and use it to its best effect to capture a greater audience.

I see this no differently for our Brigades and the environment they’re working in. If they have members that enjoy the social media tools, then I want us to be relevant for them. CFA Connect is one way of engaging for those that like it, but not the only way and I agree that we shouldn’t ever move away from local engagement.

So to answer your question - how do we balance the two? I believe we can balance it by ensuring we measure the effectiveness of both. One of the many great things about online engagement is that we can track interaction – much like you would use surveys and track responses to physical meetings.

If local brigades would like to become more involved in the online space then there’s a number of ways we could help. We could work with you to upload your local stories to CFA Connect and CFA’s online team could assist with setting up a local brigade web page/Facebook page/Twitter account.

For example if my local brigade is the “Lisa S CFA Brigade” then I could have a Twitter account that post tweets about our turns outs, community meetings and local events. This could be ‘retweeted’ by the CFA Connect account and LisaCFA account as well as linked to the brigade Facebook account. Brigades could encourage members to ask people to check out their local Facebook page.

These tools, however, require regular, timely and relevant content. Some content could come from the CFA Connect site but generally you’ll need a committed ‘social’ media person to keep it all together.

Best of luck and thanks again for getting in touch!

Lisa

Lisa

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply - much appreciated.

Comments about use of twitter are interesting and given the small 'overhead' for maintaining a twitter presence is something worth looking into.

Thanks again

No worries at all Andrew.

If you get a chance, send an email to our Communications Coordinator Jason Leigh (j.leigh@cfa.vic.gov.au) and I'll have him send you our Twitter Guide. It's a step-by-step guide to explain Twitter and help you get started.

Thanks again!

Lisa
